Peking University (北京大学) is a public research university in Beijing, Beijing. Ranked 14th in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2026 — the highest position ever achieved by a mainland Chinese university in QS.
Peking University (PKU) is China's oldest modern national university and its strongest comprehensive institution in the humanities, basic sciences, medicine and social sciences. It occupies one of the most beautiful campuses in Asia, built around the Yan Garden lake and the Boya Pagoda.
PKU admits international students through a dedicated International Students Division, with an unusually wide catalogue of English-taught master's degrees — including the Yenching Academy, the Peking University HSBC Business School and the School of Transnational Law in Shenzhen.
Why international students choose PKU
- Best choice for Chinese studies, economics, law, medicine and mathematics
- Historic campus in the heart of Beijing's research district
- Graduates gain access to the country's most influential professional networks
Programmes open to international students
| Programme | Level | Language | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chinese Language and Literature | Bachelor | Chinese | 4 years |
| International Economics and Trade | Bachelor | Chinese / English | 4 years |
| Yenching Academy — China Studies | Master | English | 2 years |
| Master of Laws (LL.M.) | Master | English | 1–2 years |
| HSBC Business School MBA | MBA | English | 2 years |
| Public Health (MPH) | Master | English / Chinese | 2 years |
| Clinical Medicine (MBBS) | Bachelor | English | 6 years |
Language requirements depend on the track: Chinese and Chinese / English and English and English / Chinese. Confirm the exact requirement with the international office, because some departments within the same university set different thresholds.
Entry requirements in detail
Bachelor: high school diploma, entrance examination or interview, HSK 5 for Chinese-taught tracks. English-taught bachelor's requires IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 90. Master's/PhD: degree certificates, transcripts, two recommendation letters and a study plan; research degrees require prior contact with a supervisor.
Deadlines, fees and how to apply
Application deadlines: Bachelor: typically 1 December – 31 March. Graduate: rolling with most schools closing in February or March.. The application fee is CNY 800 (non-refundable). Applications are submitted through the university's own international admissions system — see the official international office link at the bottom of this page.
The document set is standard across Chinese universities: passport, notarised diploma and transcripts with certified translations, a study plan or research proposal, two recommendation letters for graduate programmes, the Foreigner Physical Examination Form, a police clearance certificate and, for scholarship applicants, a CSCA score report where required. Start with document authentication eight to ten weeks before the deadline.
Tuition and total cost
CNY 26,000–30,000 per year for bachelor's; CNY 29,000–55,000 for master's; MBA programmes are higher and separately priced.
Beijing is in the North China region. A realistic student budget including accommodation, food, transport and insurance typically sits between CNY 2,100 and 7,000 per month depending on whether you live in a university dormitory and how far the campus is from the city centre.
Scholarships you can apply for
Chinese Government Scholarship (Type B university programme), Yenching Academy full fellowship, Peking University Presidential Scholarship, Beijing Municipal Government Scholarship.
The Chinese Government Scholarship requires a pre-admission document from a target university, which means the university application has to be completed before the CSC deadline. Apply to the university first, indicate every scholarship you are eligible for in the same form, and submit a separate CSC Type A application through your national embassy if its deadline allows.
Where you will study

- Li Keqiang — Economist and statesman. PKU Law graduate and holder of a doctorate in economics from the university.

How to strengthen your application
- Lead with the disciplines where PKU is genuinely strong: Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics. A study plan that references specific research groups or courses carries far more weight than a general statement.
- If you are applying for a research degree, contact a prospective supervisor 8–12 months before the deadline with a specific proposal. For Chinese universities this is the single most decisive step.
- Submit the language evidence the programme actually asks for. If you are applying to an English-taught track, ask which language the examination papers are delivered in before you accept.
- Apply to more than one university. Chinese scholarship schemes are assessed by different committees and a rejection from one does not affect the others.
Always verify current requirements on the official Peking University international admissions site and on campuschina.org, since deadlines and tuition are revised each cycle.
