Which universities lead

Tsinghua's Department of Computer Science and Technology is the strongest overall, particularly in AI, systems and theory. Peking University leads in computer vision and machine learning and hosts the Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research for the theory side. Zhejiang University's computer science school is closely tied to Alibaba and is particularly strong in databases, systems and HCI. Shanghai Jiao Tong has strong AI and theory groups, USTC leads in speech and high-performance computing, and the Harbin Institute of Technology Shenzhen campus and UESTC are the strongest for industry-oriented work.

For applied AI with a strong industry pipeline, ZJU, SJTU, HIT Shenzhen and UESTC are hard to beat. For research careers and PhD study, Tsinghua, PKU and USTC are the top choices.

What the programmes look like

Chinese-taught bachelor's degrees are four years and start with two years of mathematics, physics and programming fundamentals before specialisation. English-taught master's degrees usually run two to three years with a research thesis; doctoral programmes run four years and are largely research-based.

Assessment is examination-heavy at the bachelor's level and research-output-heavy at the doctoral level. Publication expectations for a Chinese PhD in computer science are explicit: typically at least one or two papers in CCF-ranked venues.

Getting in and getting funded

Bachelor's applicants need strong mathematics results and, for English-taught programmes, IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90. Master's and PhD applicants need a supervisor who wants them; write to two or three professors with a specific proposal and evidence you have read their work.

Most international PhD students in computer science in China are funded through CSC, university fellowships or a supervisor's research grant. Industry-sponsored places also exist, particularly in laboratories with Huawei or Alibaba collaborations.
