Most Chinese universities take international applications directly, and it is free to try. Where agents genuinely add value, and where they do not.
The direct route
Chinese universities run their own online application systems. The Ministry of Education requires them to publish admission requirements in English, and most maintain an international student office that answers emails. Application fees are CNY 400–800 and are paid to the university, not to any intermediary.
The direct route is not secret or competitive in the way that agency marketing implies. It is simply less well explained. The main difficulty is not access but knowing which documents to prepare and in what order — which this site attempts to solve directly.
Where agents add value
Agents are genuinely useful in three situations: documentary complexity (notarisation, authentication, translation, and police clearance in a country with slow bureaucracy), scholarship strategy where the applicant cannot easily reach university staff, and language barrier cases where correspondence in Chinese is necessary.
They are also useful for MBBS applicants who need to verify medical licensing recognition across several jurisdictions.
Where they do not
Agents cannot obtain admission that direct applicants cannot; they do not have a separate quota. They should never hold your original documents or charge for anything the university provides free. Be cautious of any agent that claims guaranteed admission, asks for payment to a personal account, or refuses to identify the specific universities it is applying to.
The safest approach is to use the official university application system in parallel with any agent, and to confirm directly with the university's international office that your application has been received.
