Khu phía Nam Đại học Trung Sơn: các khoa, phong cảnh và cuộc sống sinh viên tại Quảng Châu
The historic Kangleyuan campus on Guangzhou's central axis — which schools teach there, why the red-brick buildings and banyan avenues matter, and what daily life looks like inside one of China's most beautiful campuses.
Trả lời nhanh
Sun Yat-sen University (Zhongshan University, 中山大学) operates several campuses across Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen, but when Chinese students say "中大", they usually mean the south campus in Haizhu District — the historic core known as Kangleyuan, the "Garden of Wellbeing". For international applicants deciding between SYSU's campuses, understanding what actually happens on this one is the first step.
A short history, because it explains the architecture
The university was founded in 1924 by Sun Yat-sen himself as National Guangdong University and renamed in his honour in 1926. The south campus sits on the former site of Lingnan University, an American missionary institution whose early-twentieth-century buildings survived and define the campus today: red-brick facades, deep verandas built for the subtropical climate, and rows of banyan trees older than the People's Republic. Martin Hall, completed in 1906, is one of the oldest surviving university buildings in southern China. The bronze statue of Sun Yat-sen facing the central lawn and the memorial archway of the 乙丑 scholars are the two landmarks every campus tour starts from.
The result is a campus that functions as an open-air museum — visitors are a daily sight on weekends — while remaining a working university with more than 30,000 students across its Guangzhou sites.
Which schools are on the south campus
SYSU distributes its faculties across campuses, and the south campus is the traditional home of the humanities and social sciences. The main residents:
- The faculty of humanities: Chinese language and literature, history, philosophy, and foreign languages — all of them old, well-funded departments with doctoral programmes open to international students.
- Social sciences: sociology and anthropology, political science and public administration, journalism and communication, law.
- Business and economics: the Lingnan (University) College and the School of Business — the Lingnan college in particular maintains extensive exchange agreements with North American and European business schools, which matters for international students seeking semester exchanges.
- A slice of the sciences and the School of Government-affiliated research institutes, plus most of the university-level administration.
The practical consequence for applicants: if your programme is humanities, social science, law or business, you will most likely spend your degree here. Medicine, engineering and marine science live on other campuses — check the campus assignment in your admission letter before signing a lease.
The campus as a place
Kangleyuan is repeatedly voted among the most beautiful campuses in China, and the reason is density: within one walkable rectangle you get the central lawn framed by the red-brick landmarks, the shaded main avenue of old banyans, small lakes with egrets, and the north gate opening onto the Pearl River — where the ferry wharf and the riverside promenade make evening runs a campus institution. Guangzhou's Line 8 metro stops at the campus gate, and the haizhu bridge skyline is twenty minutes on foot.
The subtropical climate writes its own rules: the campus is green in February, brutal in July, and the typhoon-season downpours turn the tree-lined paths into temporary canals. Buildings on this campus were designed for cross-ventilation before air conditioning, and the old ones still feel best in that mode.
Student life
- Food — multiple canteens compete for students, and the campus sits in Haizhu, which means genuinely Cantonese food culture: morning tea (yum cha) culture, cheap milk-tea shops, and the late-night food streets on the far side of the gate.
- Societies — more than 100 registered clubs, from lion dance and Cantonese opera to debate, rowing on the Pearl River and one of the country's oldest university Model UN programmes.
- Sports — a large athletics stadium, pools, and riverside running; the campus marathon each autumn is a fixture.
- Housing — dormitory costs are among the lowest of any tier-one city (CNY 600–1,400 per month), and first-year international students are housed on campus, which removes the hardest part of moving to China.
What the south campus does not offer is the new-economy buzz of Shenzhen or the sea views of Zhuhai. It offers something older: a dense, walkable, tree-shaded intellectual neighbourhood in the middle of a 15-million-person city, ten minutes from the commercial centre of Guangzhou. For students in the humanities, social sciences and business, that combination is hard to beat.
The bottom line: choose SYSU's south campus with your eyes open about the campus assignment. If your school is here, you get one of China's most atmospheric campuses, a genuine Cantonese daily life, and a university whose name carries weight across Southeast Asia, Africa and Europe — all at a cost of living well below Beijing or Shanghai.
