The first attempt failed

Kandit applied unsuccessfully for the Chinese Government Scholarship first. Rather than changing direction, he used the following year to plan ahead and refine his materials, and applied for the Tsinghua University tuition scholarship. That attempt succeeded.

His account of the difference is not about talent but about lead time. During a year as an exchange student at Chongqing University he had already started preparing his scholarship applications, and he submitted in the earliest available window the second time round.

Reading the official rules, then the students

He describes two research channels. The first is official: the university websites and the China Scholarship Council, read for the most current requirements and policies rather than for anything summarised by a third party. He notes that submission procedures differ substantially between universities — some require only an upload to the CSC platform, others require applicants to pass the university's own screening or interview first.

The second channel is other students. He joined Facebook groups and RedNote communities where international students share their experiences, on the reasoning that the most useful information often comes from people who have already been through the process. He also recommends asking alumni, especially of the same programme, because their advice prevents avoidable mistakes.

Study plan and recommendation letters

On the study plan, he rejects the idea of a template. His position is that everyone thinks differently, and what matters is whether the document lets the university and its committees see your skills and potential and understand your academic plans for the years ahead.

He arranged both recommendation letters a year in advance and chose professors familiar with his academic performance. One asked him to draft the first version, which he then revised and signed; the other wrote his own.

The lesson about timing

The most striking part of his account is about a classmate whose Chinese was better than his own. That student applied at the last minute after hearing that Kandit had been admitted, had not prepared his materials in advance, missed the deadline and lost an application fee of CNY 800.

Kandit's own conclusion is blunt: ability alone is not enough. Start early, plan the strategy and be ready for each step. He also flags one country-specific trap — in Thailand the police clearance certificate can only be processed in Bangkok, so applicants from other cities need extra planning time.
