How funding actually works
Almost every Chinese scholarship is awarded for one academic year and renewed annually against performance criteria covering credits, marks, attendance and — for research students — the supervisor's evaluation. Losing funding is common and almost always avoidable: the most frequent cause is failing the preparatory Chinese language test that undergraduate scholarship holders without sufficient Chinese must pass at the end of their first year.
Two structural facts shape application strategy. First, the CSC requires a pre-admission document from a target university, so the university application must be completed before the scholarship deadline. Second, the embassy route (Type A) and the university route (Type B) are assessed by different committees — so a rejection on one route has no effect on the other, and applying to both roughly doubles your chances at almost no extra cost.
If you do not win a full award
Partial funding is far easier to obtain and often removes the largest cost. A tuition waiver from a provincial or university scheme, combined with a research assistantship paid from a supervisor's grant, can cover most of the cost of a postgraduate degree in a lower-cost city. Provincial schemes are consistently less competitive than CSC, and university-level president's scholarships are frequently under-subscribed because they are less well publicised.
