World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Scholarship
A partial Chinese government award granted to WMO: tuition, accommodation and insurance only, with no stipend. It is restricted to meteorology, hydrology and atmospheric science, and is one of very few government routes into those fields.
What it covers
- Tuition waived in full
- Free on-campus housing or the equivalent allowance
- Comprehensive medical insurance, CNY 800 a year
- No stipend — the key difference from every other CSC programme
Amounts and standards
| What is covered | Tuition + accommodation + insurance, no living allowance |
|---|---|
| Equivalent value | Roughly CNY 32,000–50,000 a year depending on band and level |
| What you pay | Living costs of about CNY 1,500–2,500 a month, higher in tier-one cities |
| Realistic annual outlay | CNY 20,000–30,000 in most cities |
Who is eligible
- Nationals of WMO member states, recommended by the national meteorological service or the Permanent Representative
- Bachelor, master’s and doctoral levels, restricted to meteorology, atmospheric science, hydrology, climate and related geoscience
- Standard CSC age and diploma rules, plus pre-admission
How to apply
- 1
Approach your meteorological service
The national weather or hydrology service, or the WMO Permanent Representative, issues the recommendation.
- 2
WMO nominates
The WMO Secretariat consolidates nominations for CSC; individuals cannot apply directly.
- 3
CSC places you
Discipline matching favours universities strong in atmospheric science — Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, Peking, Nanjing and others.
- 4
Admission
Outcomes are communicated through WMO and the embassy.
Deadline and timing
Announced annually through WMO and national services; the quota is tiny, often one or two places per country.
Because there is no stipend, budget before you apply. If you need full funding, apply to the bilateral programme in parallel.
