Two independent Sino-foreign universities operate in Jiangsu province. Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in Suzhou was established in 2006 and awards University of Liverpool degrees alongside Chinese ones, teaching entirely in English on a British-style academic calendar. Duke Kunshan University opened in 2013 and awards a Duke University degree.

Both are positioned differently from the Sino-foreign institutes inside Chinese universities, in that they are independent institutions rather than programmes within a Chinese university, and their academic governance is jointly held with the foreign partner.

For applicants who want a Western-style degree but wish to spend their studies in China, these institutions offer the clearest version of that arrangement.
