More than 570,000 Chinese students studied abroad in 2025, with 94% returning

Ministry of Education data shows a high and rising return rate among Chinese graduates of overseas universities.

Data released by the Ministry of Education in April 2026 showed that more than 570,000 Chinese students pursued higher education overseas in 2025, and about 535,600 returned to China after completing their studies — a return rate of roughly 94%.

The figure matters for international students in an indirect but practical way. A high proportion of returning graduates means Chinese universities and research institutes are receiving a large inflow of internationally trained faculty, which is one reason for the rapid improvement in research culture and English-language teaching at leading Chinese institutions over the past decade.

The plan for 2026–2030 commits to improving services for Chinese students abroad and encouraging more to return.

Tuition, deadlines and stipend figures are revised each cycle. Always confirm the current position with the university's international student office and on the official portal at campuschina.org before you apply.
