MBBS applicants warned again: check your home country's recognition list first
China's English-taught medical degree is well established, but licensing rules differ sharply between countries.
The English-taught MBBS remains the most popular single degree programme among international students in China, with tens of thousands of students concentrated in Sichuan, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Changsha, Jinan and Chengdu. Tuition ranges from CNY 45,000 to 80,000 per year, and a six-year programme typically costs CNY 400,000–700,000 in total including living expenses.
The recurring warning from universities and regulators is that a Chinese MBBS is not automatically a licence to practise elsewhere. Medical councils in India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and other countries maintain specific lists of recognised foreign institutions and, in several cases, require a qualifying examination before registration.
Prospective students are advised to confirm three things before applying: that the university appears on China's Ministry of Education list of institutions permitted to teach MBBS in English, that it appears on their own regulator's recognised list, and what proportion of the university's international graduates in their country have passed the relevant licensing examination.
