What exists

Most major Chinese universities run summer programmes from four weeks to two months, typically combining Chinese language classes with lectures on Chinese culture, business or current affairs. Fudan's International Summer Session, Peking University's summer school, Tsinghua's and Zhejiang's programmes, and the Beijing Language and Culture University's intensive courses are among the best known.

There are also semester exchange programmes run through partner universities in Europe, North America, Africa, Asia and Latin America, which usually waive the Chinese tuition and are the cheapest route of all.

Why they are worth doing

A summer school is the cheapest and shortest way to establish whether you can live in China, whether the language is manageable and whether the university is what you expected. Several of the students in published accounts report that a summer programme changed their plans from "maybe" to a full degree application.

They also generate a transcript and, in some cases, recommendation letters from Chinese faculty — useful if you later apply for CSC funding.

Funding and practicalities

Confucius Institute summer programmes are often fully funded through local Confucius Institutes or partner universities. Some Chinese universities offer their own summer scholarships. Otherwise expect CNY 8,000–20,000 for a two-to-four-week programme including accommodation.

Practical requirements are simple: an X2 visa for programmes under 180 days, which is straightforward to obtain with the university's admission notice and the DQ form.
