Why it is hard

Chinese students are generally described as welcoming but unlikely to initiate contact with international students, partly because of language anxiety and partly because their own social lives are organised around class groups and dormitories formed in the first weeks of study.

The result, repeatedly reported, is that international students who wait to be approached end up with an entirely international friend group.

What reportedly works

Joining clubs is the most frequently cited approach: sports teams, martial arts, music, photography, robotics and volunteering all put you in repeated contact with the same people, which is what friendships need. Language exchange partnerships with a fixed weekly meeting are also widely recommended, though students note that these often stay transactional unless you invest in the relationship outside the exchange.

Sitting in the same seat in a large lecture, joining group projects voluntarily and asking classmates for help with coursework are small actions that consistently come up in accounts as the ones that led to real friendships.

The language threshold

The most consistent finding is that conversational Chinese is the real gate. Students who reach roughly HSK 4 describe a step change in their social experience; below that, interactions stay limited to those who are willing to speak English.

The second consistent finding is that being the one who initiates — saying hello, inviting people to eat, suggesting a specific plan rather than a vague intention — matters more than language ability in the first instance.
