What six months gets you

With an hour a day, most learners reach HSK 2–3 in six months: enough to handle greetings, numbers, ordering food, asking directions, reading simple signs and pinyin-independent recognition of a few hundred characters. If you add a weekly tutor, HSK 3 becomes realistic.

The practical effect is enormous. You can receive packages, use a delivery app, register your address, and hold a five-minute conversation with a classmate — the daily tasks that otherwise require the international office.

What to use

The resources most consistently recommended in student accounts are the standard HSK textbook series for structure, a spaced-repetition flashcard system for characters, a language exchange app for speaking, and Chinese television with subtitles for listening. Tone practice with audio feedback is the part that most self-study materials handle worst and where a tutor pays for themselves.

Learning to type Chinese with pinyin input is worth doing early; being able to write by hand matters less for daily life than being able to recognise characters, but it is required for HSK at higher levels.

The compound effect

The important point is not the level you reach but that you arrive able to keep improving. Students who arrive at zero tend to spend their first semester in the international student bubble; students who arrive at HSK 2 or 3 make Chinese friends earlier and, by the end of the first year, are in a different position entirely.
