选校与选导师:成功申请做对了什么

与浪费一年相比,申请费并不贵。拿到资助的申请者通常瞄准三到五所不同城市的大学;读研究型学位的,还会在提交申请前先联系好导师。

快速回答

Build a spread, not a wish list

The most consistent structure across successful accounts is three to five applications distributed across universities of varying competitiveness, usually in at least two cities. The reasoning is arithmetic: application fees are modest, and the downside of a single application is the loss of a full year.

It also protects against a specific risk that appears in the accounts — a scheme closing while you wait for a different result. Where policy allows, running the embassy route and the university route together, plus a provincial or municipal scheme, means several committees see the file in one cycle.

For research degrees, start with the supervisor

In Chinese universities a doctoral place normally requires a supervisor to accept the candidate before the administration will process a scholarship application. Supervisors also control funding, laboratory and equipment access, and the timeline on which you graduate.

The outreach that worked in the accounts was short, specific and grounded: it referenced the professor's actual research, proposed a concrete direction, and attached a one-page CV and transcripts. One account describes a reply arriving the same day; that is unusual, and the reported norm is a low response rate. Fifteen tailored emails producing three replies is a realistic expectation, and sending all fifteen is what makes the difference.

Choose on the department, not the badge

Beyond roughly the global top 200, differences between Chinese universities are a poor guide to differences in the student experience. The specific department matters most for postgraduate study, and the accounts on this site show applicants succeeding at institutions that were mid-ranked in the university table but leading in their particular field.

City, cost, programme language, supervisor and scholarship matter more than the overall ranking figure. A project 985 university outside the first-tier cities can offer the same tuition at 40–60% of the living costs of Beijing or Shanghai.

Check the practical constraints before you commit

Confirm in writing which campus your programme actually uses — several Chinese universities deliver programmes in more than one city, and accepting an offer without checking is a documented problem. Confirm the language the examinations are delivered in, not just the language of instruction advertised.

Check that the institution is on the Ministry of Education list of recognised institutions, and for professional degrees such as medicine or law, check your own country's recognition list or regulator requirements before applying. And check scholarship stacking rules: overlapping government-funded awards cannot be held simultaneously, so winning two full awards does not double the benefit.
