快速回答

An emerging university city

Suzhou lacks a flagship comprehensive university of its own, but it hosts a rapidly growing set of branch campuses: Nanjing University opened a large new Suzhou campus in 2023, Renmin University runs its Silk Road School here, Southeast University has a graduate campus, and Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a fully independent Sino-British university teaching entirely in English.

XJTLU deserves particular attention from international applicants: it is one of the few Chinese institutions that awards a UK degree alongside the Chinese one and runs on a British academic calendar.

The city also hosts Duke Kunshan University, another English-taught Sino-foreign university, in nearby Kunshan.

Costs and commuting

CNY 3,000–3,800 in a dormitory and CNY 1,800–3,000 off campus — noticeably cheaper than Shanghai for equivalent quality. High-speed trains run to Shanghai every few minutes, taking 23–30 minutes for about CNY 40.

The metro connects the old town, the industrial park and most campuses.

Industry

Suzhou Industrial Park is one of the largest manufacturing hubs in the world and a major base for electronics, semiconductors, biotech and precision engineering, with a large expatriate professional community.

For engineering, business and biotech students, Suzhou offers internships at scale with an easier visa and living-cost picture than Shanghai.

Culture and climate

The classical gardens — the Humble Administrator's Garden, Lingering Garden and Master of the Nets Garden — the Grand Canal, Pingjiang Road and Tiger Hill are all part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing.

The climate is subtropical: hot, humid summers at 28–36 °C, mild winters at 3–10 °C and a plum-rain season in June.
