The cheapest tier-one city
A student living in a university dormitory can manage on CNY 2,800–3,500 per month, which is roughly two-thirds of the equivalent budget in Shanghai. Food is cheap and excellent, the metro is inexpensive, and clothing and electronics are the cheapest in China because Guangzhou is the country's manufacturing and wholesale hub.
Off-campus rooms in Tianhe or Haizhu start around CNY 1,800–3,000 for a shared flat room. Many students stay in dormitories because the campuses are spread out and the dorms are comfortable.
Cities within reach
Guangzhou sits at the centre of the Greater Bay Area. Shenzhen is 30 minutes by high-speed rail, Hong Kong about 50 minutes, Macao around an hour by coach, and Foshan, Dongguan and Zhuhai are all within an hour. This is the single biggest practical advantage of studying here: you can interview in Shenzhen or Zhuhai and be back on campus the same evening.
Sun Yat-sen University has campuses in Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen, so check which one your programme uses. South China University of Technology's main campus is in Tianhe and its international campus in Panyu.
Language, food and climate
Cantonese is the local language and is widely spoken, but teaching and official business are in Mandarin. Halal, vegetarian, Indian, African and Southeast Asian restaurants are all easy to find around the university districts and in Xiaobei, which has a large Muslim community.
The climate is subtropical: short, mild winters and long, humid summers with heavy rain from April to September. Typhoons occasionally affect the region in summer and are taken seriously — campuses close and warnings are broadcast.
Working after graduation
Guangzhou and Shenzhen together are China's largest manufacturing, export and consumer-electronics base. Graduates of SYSU and SCUT in engineering, business and medicine are recruited heavily by firms across Guangdong, and the Greater Bay Area has several dedicated graduate work-permit routes for international graduates of Chinese universities.
