What they saw

A delegation of around 100 people, including Flying Tigers veterans' descendants as well as teachers and students from Flying Tigers Friendship Schools, spent five days in Wuhan. At the Hubei Humanoid Robot Innovation Center they watched humanoid robots dance, write calligraphy, make coffee, pour tea, play chess and hold conversations.

One student in the delegation compared it directly with what she had seen online: videos of robots doing small dances and then falling over. In Wuhan, she noted, the robots could hop on one leg and move around stably. Her verdict was that it exceeded her expectations and was considerably more advanced than anything she had seen at home.

Why this matters for applicants

Anthropomorphic robots are no longer a demonstration project in China: the country has the largest installed base of industrial robots in the world and a densely clustered humanoid robotics sector in Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Wuhan.

For students considering engineering, mechatronics or AI, the practical implication is that laboratory work and internships in China frequently involve hardware that is genuinely at the leading edge — and that the gap between what visitors expect and what they find is itself an argument for going.
