Hangzhou is the headquarters city of Alibaba, Ant Group, NetEase and a dense cluster of e-commerce, logistics and fintech companies. Zhejiang University's computer science and engineering graduates are among its principal recruitment pools, and the Xixi campus area is the centre of the ecosystem.

For international graduates, the accessible roles are those that require combination skills: Chinese language plus technical ability, or international market knowledge plus understanding of how Chinese platforms work. Chinese firms expanding overseas recruit specifically for these combinations.

The practical prerequisite is the work permit, which normally requires two years of relevant experience or a higher degree. Many international graduates of Chinese universities therefore first work elsewhere in Asia and transfer in, or work for a Chinese firm operating in their home country.
