The realistic options
A full tuition waiver from a provincial or university scheme removes the largest single cost while leaving you responsible for accommodation and living expenses. This is the most common outcome for applicants who are strong but not exceptional.
A research assistantship in a funded laboratory can add CNY 1,000–3,000 per month and sometimes an accommodation subsidy. Work-study positions on campus — library, international office, language tutoring — pay modestly but legally, unlike off-campus work without a permit.
How to combine them
Stack a provincial tuition waiver with a laboratory assistantship and a home-country grant and the arithmetic changes completely: on-campus accommodation is often CNY 6,000–15,000 a year, food in campus canteens CNY 1,000–1,500 a month, and other costs CNY 500–1,000 a month. A student who has solved tuition can often live on CNY 25,000–40,000 a year in a city like Xi'an, Changchun, Wuhan or Chengdu.
Ask the international office in writing which awards can be held simultaneously — some scholarships prohibit stacking.
Where to look
Check three layers: provincial education department websites, the university's international student scholarship page, and the individual school or laboratory page for research funding. The third layer is the least visible and the most fruitful for postgraduate applicants.
