Studying sports science and physical education in China

A serious field in China, with strong state investment and dedicated universities for sport.

Quick answer

Where to study

Beijing Sport University is the flagship sports university and the largest in the world by student numbers, with strong programmes in sports science, sports medicine and sports management. Shanghai University of Sport is the strongest for kinesiology and sports rehabilitative medicine. Wuhan Sports University and Chengdu Sport University lead in the central and western regions.

Many comprehensive universities also run physical education and sports science departments, including Beijing Normal University and East China Normal University.

Distinctive research areas

Traditional Chinese exercise science — taijiquan, qigong, wushu — is a genuine research specialism with clinical trials on balance, hypertension and rehabilitation. Sports medicine research in China is closely tied to elite athlete support and to the national fitness programme.

Sports management and sports economics are growing fields given the scale of China's sports industry and events programme.

Practical notes

Most teaching is in Chinese, requiring HSK 4–5, but several programmes in sports science and sports management are available in English at master's level. Physical fitness and, for coaching-related programmes, demonstrated athletic ability are usually part of the selection process.

Tuition, deadlines and stipend figures are revised each cycle. Always confirm the current position with the university's international student office and on the official portal at campuschina.org before you apply.
