Field notes: mental health support for international students in China

What universities provide, what they do not, and how students have navigated the gap.

Editorial field notes. Compiled from publicly available descriptions of student life rather than a single named interview. No individuals are invented; no named person or institution is attributed a statement they did not make.

What is available

Most large universities have a psychological counselling centre, and several have staff who work with international students. Availability of English-language counselling varies enormously: some universities offer it routinely, others only by arrangement, and some only in Chinese.

The international student office is usually the first point of contact and can refer students onward. Chinese hospital psychiatry departments exist in major cities and can be accessed privately, though waiting times and language barriers are real.

What is not

Students consistently report that the winter, the language barrier and the distance from family create a difficult period around months three to five, and that this is under-discussed in pre-departure material. The most commonly reported protective factors are a fixed social routine, sport, contact with home on a schedule rather than impulsively, and Chinese language progress.

Home-country insurance with international mental health cover, or a telehealth arrangement with a therapist in your own language, is a practical measure that many students put in place before leaving.

If things go wrong

The practical escalation path reported by students: talk to the international student office, then the university counselling service, then a hospital. If you need to return home temporarily, the scholarship annual review process does allow for documented medical grounds — but get documentation at the time, not retrospectively.

For students on CSC or university scholarships, note that the scholarship includes comprehensive medical insurance, which covers hospital treatment.

Tuition, deadlines and stipend figures are revised each cycle. Always confirm the current position with the university's international student office and on the official portal at campuschina.org before you apply.
