After you accept: the sequence between an offer letter and your first class
From admission notice to JW form, visa, residence permit, registration and enrolment.
- 1. Accept the offer and pay any deposit or first tuition instalment required by the university.
- 2. Receive the admission notice and the Visa Application for Study in China form — JW201 if you hold a Chinese Government Scholarship, JW202 if you are self-funded. Both are issued electronically through studyinchina.edu.cn.
- 3. Apply for an X1 visa (studies over 180 days) or X2 visa (up to 180 days) at a Chinese embassy or consulate, using the COVA online form and appointment system where required.
- 4. Complete the Foreigner Physical Examination Form at a recognised clinic if you have not already done so; some universities accept completion in China after arrival.
- 5. Book accommodation and arrival, and inform the international student office of your arrival date so orientation and registration can be arranged.
- 6. Register your temporary residence at the local police station within 24 hours of arrival — usually as a group session during orientation.
- 7. Apply for the residence permit at the local exit-entry administration bureau within 30 days of entry.
- 8. Open a Chinese bank account, get a Chinese SIM card, and link both to WeChat Pay and Alipay.
- 9. Complete university registration, collect your student card, attend orientation and have your medical examination verified if required.
Tuition, deadlines and stipend figures are revised each cycle. Always confirm the current position with the university's international student office and on the official portal at campuschina.org before you apply.
