X1 and X2 student visas and the residence permit: the complete process

Which visa you need, what the JW201/JW202 forms are for, and the 30-day clock that starts when you land.

Quick answer

Which visa you need

X1 for programmes lasting more than 180 days — which covers essentially every degree and academic-year language course. X2 for short courses up to 180 days, such as a semester language programme or a summer school.

X2 holders who need to stay longer for legitimate reasons can apply to extend their stay, but they cannot convert an X2 into a residence permit without leaving and re-entering on an X1.

Documents

Passport valid for at least six months with a blank page. Completed visa application form and a compliant photograph. The university admission notice. The Visa Application for Study in China form: JW201 for scholarship holders and JW202 for self-funded students, both issued electronically through studyinchina.edu.cn. Proof of legal residence if you are applying outside your home country.

Many Chinese missions require an online appointment through the COVA system at cova.cs.mfa.gov.cn. Check your specific embassy or consulate for local requirements, since processing times and appointment rules vary.

After you arrive

Within 24 hours of arrival, register your temporary residence at the local police station; your university usually arranges a group registration session. Within 30 days, apply in person at the local exit-entry administration bureau for the residence permit, submitting your passport, the application form, a photograph, the school's letter confirming your study period, the admission notice and the temporary residence registration form.

For permits valid for more than one year you also need a health certificate from a Chinese health and quarantine authority or a county-level or higher medical institution. If any paperwork is incomplete the bureau will tell you everything missing in one visit.

Extensions must be applied for at least 30 days before expiry. And if you intend to work part-time or intern off campus, you need school and employer approval documents and an annotation added to the residence permit.
