Where to study design and art
Tsinghua's Academy of Arts and Design is the strongest design school in Asia across industrial design, visual communication, environmental design and information art. Tongji's College of Design and Innovation is internationally recognised for service design and social innovation. The Central Academy of Fine Arts and the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou are the two leading dedicated art academies.
Shanghai University's digital art and film schools, and the Communication University of China, are the strongest for media production.
Film and drama
The Beijing Film Academy and the Central Academy of Drama are the country's most selective institutions in their fields, with admission ratios that rival the best universities. They teach almost entirely in Chinese and require portfolio and performance assessments. International students also study at the Communication University of China and at Shanghai Theatre Academy.
Practical considerations
Portfolio is decisive. Chinese art schools assess drawing and design fundamentals rigorously, and applicants often spend months in preparatory studios. If your previous education was in a different tradition, be prepared for a foundation year of technical drawing and colour studies.
Chinese-taught programmes require HSK 4–5. English-taught options exist for design management and some postgraduate design programmes, particularly at Tongji and Tsinghua.
