Notes de terrain : les erreurs de visa et d'immigration réellement commises par les étudiants
Compiled from published warnings and student accounts: the errors that cause serious problems, and the ones that are merely annoying.
The serious ones
Overstaying the 30-day X1 window without applying for a residence permit is the mistake with real consequences: fines, and in some cases detention or deportation. The window runs from the date of entry, not from the start of term, so students who arrive early for travel are most at risk.
Working off campus without a school approval letter and an internship annotation on the residence permit is the second serious error. Enforcement varies by city, but the consequences fall on the student, not the employer.
Third: leaving China without checking whether your visa was single or multiple entry. An X1 is single entry — if you leave before converting it to a residence permit, you may not be able to re-enter on the same visa.
The annoying ones
Arriving before the university can issue the enrolment certificate, which delays the residence permit application. Failing to register the temporary residence address within 24 hours, which then delays everything downstream. Letting the residence permit expire rather than applying 30 days in advance for the extension. And moving house without updating the registered address.
All of these are recoverable, but each one costs a week of queuing.
The habit that prevents all of it
Keep a single folder — physical and digital — containing your passport, visa page, admission notice, JW form, residence permit, temporary residence registration form and insurance certificate. Photograph each one. Students who maintain this folder report almost no immigration difficulties; those who do not report most of them.
