Compiled accounts of dormitory life — the good, the irritating and the cultural adjustments.

The physical reality

Standard international student dormitories are double rooms with shared bathrooms, air conditioning, a desk and wardrobe each, and internet. Newer buildings offer single rooms or studio-style accommodation at higher cost. Most have shared kitchens, laundry rooms and 24-hour security with card access.

The single most consistent observation is that dormitories are on campus, which in a Chinese city is a significant quality-of-life advantage: commuting in Beijing or Shanghai can consume two hours a day.

The social reality

International dormitories tend to be socially separate from Chinese student accommodation, and students report that this separation is self-reinforcing: it is easier to speak English in the international building, so people do. Most accounts recommend spending at least some time in mixed or Chinese-majority housing, or failing that, arranging structured contact through clubs and classes.

Dormitory rules vary widely: curfews, guest policies, cooking restrictions and quiet hours are stricter at some universities than others, and enforcement is inconsistent.

Practical tips that recur

Bring or buy a power strip with Chinese-compatible plugs, buy bedding locally rather than flying with it, arrange a Chinese bank card and mobile payment before you need them, and photograph the room condition on the day you move in.

For students with dietary requirements, check the halal options in your university's canteens before you arrive — most large universities have them, but not all, and this is a genuinely important factor for some applicants.

Les frais de scolarité, les échéances et les montants des bourses sont révisés à chaque cycle. Vérifiez toujours la situation en cours auprès du service des étudiants internationaux de l'université et sur le portail officiel campuschina.org avant de candidater.
