Université Fudan : filières phares, professeurs influents et impact scientifique
Where Fudan is genuinely world-class — journalism, economics, mathematics, clinical medicine and microelectronics — plus the scholars behind the citations and what the numbers actually say.
Réponse rapide
Fudan University is one of the two universities in Shanghai that everyone in China knows by shorthand — the other is Shanghai Jiao Tong — and the two are constantly compared. For an international applicant the useful question is narrower: in which subjects is Fudan genuinely outstanding, who teaches there, and what does the research record look like in numbers you can check? This guide answers those three questions in order.
The disciplines where Fudan is strongest
Fudan's traditional centre of gravity is the humanities and social sciences, which is unusual among China's top engineering-heavy universities. Three fields stand out with a long institutional history:
- Journalism — Fudan's School of Journalism grew out of the department founded in 1929, the first of its kind in China, and remains the most influential journalism faculty in the country. Its alumni dominate major media groups, and its research on digital media and public communication is among the most cited in the field.
- Economics and management — the School of Economics and the Fudan International School of Management sit at the core of a finance ecosystem that connects directly to Shanghai's Lujiazui financial district. Placement into banks, funds and consultancies is the strongest argument for the program.
- Clinical medicine — through the Shanghai Medical College, descended from one of the country's oldest medical schools, with Huashan and Zhongshan hospitals as teaching hospitals. Both are among the most prestigious hospitals in China.
In the sciences and engineering, four areas carry the "double first-class" label and international visibility: mathematics, physics, chemistry and microelectronics. The Shanghai Center for Mathematical Sciences, founded with the involvement of Fields medallist Shing-Tung Yau, has recruited faculty trained at Harvard, Princeton and Paris, and runs a year-round visiting programme that brings leading number theorists and geometers to campus. The State Key Laboratory of ASIC and System anchors the microelectronics programme, which matters because China's semiconductor drive has turned chip design into one of the best-funded graduate fields in the country.
Political science and international relations deserve a separate mention: Fudan's School of International Relations and Public Affairs is a frequent convenor of track-two diplomacy events, and its China-focused policy research is widely read abroad. For international students who want to study China itself rather than treat it as a backdrop, this is one of the best environments in the country.
The professors people actually cite
University marketing lists every professor as distinguished; the more honest signal is who appears in public discourse and who is cited across disciplines. Three examples illustrate the range:
- Jin Li (金力), geneticist and university president since 2021, is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences whose work on population genetics and the genomic history of East Asian populations has thousands of citations. His dual role as working scientist and chief executive of the university is representative of Fudan's research-first culture.
- Zhang Wenhong (张文宏), head of the infectious disease department at Huashan Hospital, became a national household name during the COVID-19 pandemic for explaining outbreak science in plain language. He remains the most visible face of Fudan's clinical medicine, and his department runs research collaborations with European and American hospitals that international medical students can observe.
- The mathematics faculty around the Shanghai Center for Mathematical Sciences publishes in the top journals of number theory, geometry and partial differential equations, and the center's seminar lists are public — a good way to check in advance whether your subfield is genuinely active there.
A practical note for applicants: Chinese-language faculty pages are more complete than the English ones. Before choosing a supervisor for a research degree, read the Chinese page of the department, then email the professor directly — responses are far more common than applicants expect.
Research impact in numbers
Bibliometric claims deserve scepticism, so here is what can be checked. In the Nature Index, which counts authorships in a fixed set of high-quality natural-science journals, Fudan has for several years ranked among the top five institutions in China and inside the global top twenty — a position comparable to universities like Tokyo and North Carolina. In Elsevier's Essential Science Indicators, Fudan places in the top one percent globally in roughly twenty subject areas, including clinical medicine, chemistry, materials science, pharmacology, social sciences generally, and — unusually for a comprehensive university — economics and business.
In field-normalised citation metrics, Fudan's strongest-performing papers cluster in biomedical sciences and materials science. The university's share of highly cited researchers listed by Clarivate has grown steadily, driven mostly by the medical campus and the microelectronics institute. What the aggregate numbers hide is balance: Fudan is one of the few Chinese universities whose social-science and humanities output also circulates internationally, particularly in journalism studies, Chinese politics and public health policy.
For a prospective research student, the actionable summary is this: in mathematics, clinical medicine, journalism and China-studies, Fudan is a top-three environment in China; in microelectronics and biomedical sciences it is top-ten and climbing fast; and its cross-disciplinary institutes — brain science, cognitive studies, the Institute of Advanced Studies — are the fastest-moving part of the institution.
What this means for international applicants
- Undergraduate entry is competitive but far less crowded than for domestic students; the international track uses a separate application reviewed by the International Students Office.
- For master's and PhD study, funding is the decisive variable: the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), the Shanghai Government Scholarship and departmental assistantships all apply — apply for all three in parallel.
- English-taught master's programmes exist in business, medicine (MBBS), international relations and several engineering fields; Chinese-taught programmes are wider but usually require HSK 5.
- Shanghai itself is part of the value: internships in finance, media and biotech are within metro reach, and the university's career office has dedicated channels for international students.
The bottom line: Fudan rewards applicants who know which department they want and contact it directly. Its weakest point is undergraduate breadth in engineering compared with Tsinghua or SJTU; its strongest point is the combination of humanities depth, medical prestige and a mathematics centre that is now among the best in Asia.
