A shared campus
Tianjin University and Nankai University moved to the Haihe Education Park in Jinnan district in 2015, and their campuses are adjacent. The practical effect is that students at either can enrol in courses at both, use each other's libraries, and benefit from a combined student social scene that is one of the largest in northern China.
Tianjin University, founded in 1895, is China's oldest modern university and the leading one for chemical engineering. Nankai, founded in 1919, is the comprehensive and humanities-weighted one, strong in chemistry, mathematics, economics and history.
Costs and Beijing access
CNY 2,700–3,500 per month in a dormitory, CNY 1,500–2,800 off campus. The binjiang and Heping districts near the historic campuses are the most convenient for city life.
Tianjin to Beijing is 30–35 minutes on the intercity high-speed line, running frequently and costing around CNY 55. Many students intern in Beijing while living in Tianjin, though note the internship-permit rules.
The city
Tianjin's historic foreign concessions area contains some of the best preserved European colonial architecture in China, and the city has its own distinctive snack culture — goubuli baozi, jianbing and mahua.
It is also a major industrial city with strong aerospace, petrochemical and automotive sectors, including Airbus's only non-European final assembly line, in the Binhai New Area.
Climate
Four distinct seasons with cold dry winters at -6 to 4 °C and hot humid summers at 26–34 °C. Spring is short and often windy; autumn is the best season.
