Programme types

Non-degree language programmes run for one semester or one academic year, with 18–24 class hours a week, often supplemented by elective courses in business Chinese, Chinese culture, calligraphy or HSK preparation. Most major universities run four intakes: March, June or July, September and December.

Degree programmes in Chinese language and literature (four years) or in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages are also available and are well funded through the Confucius Institute Scholarship.

Where to study

Beijing Language and Culture University is the dedicated Chinese-language university and the most intensive option. Beijing Normal and East China Normal Universities run very large, well-organised centres. Fudan and Nanjing University are strong for academic Chinese. Regional options in Chengdu, Kunming, Xi'an and Harbin offer faster immersion because less English is spoken around you.

Classes are streamed by level with a placement test at the start of each semester, so you can begin as an absolute beginner and progress at your own pace.

Realistic progress

A motivated beginner studying intensively reaches HSK 3 in about six months, HSK 4 in twelve to eighteen months and HSK 5 in two to three years. Reading and writing lag behind speaking unless you deliberately practise characters daily. Tones are the hardest part for most learners and the part that pays off most.

Measured in contact hours, expect roughly 600–800 hours to reach HSK 4 and 1,200–1,800 hours to reach HSK 5.

Las cifras de matrícula, plazos y estipendios se revisan cada ciclo. Confirma siempre la situación actual con la oficina de estudiantes internacionales de la universidad y en el portal oficial campuschina.org antes de solicitar.
