The accredited schools

China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai is the best-known Chinese business school internationally and consistently ranks in the global top 20 of the Financial Times MBA table. Tsinghua School of Economics and Management, Peking University Guanghua School of Management, Antai College at Shanghai Jiao Tong, Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, Renmin University Business School and Fudan School of Management all hold accreditation from AACSB, EQUIS or AMBA, several of them triple-accredited.

For a specifically China-focused or Asia-focused career, these schools provide networks that are difficult to replicate outside China.

Costs and structure

Full-time IMBA tuition ranges from around CNY 180,000 to CNY 400,000 for the two-year programme, with CEIBS and Tsinghua at the top of that range. Living costs add CNY 60,000–120,000 per year in Shanghai or Beijing.

Admission typically requires two to three years of work experience, a bachelor's degree, two recommendation letters and an interview. GMAT is increasingly optional, especially for applicants with strong work experience; some schools run their own aptitude tests.

Is it worth it?

The return depends entirely on what you do with it. For a career in Chinese or Asian business, supply chain, manufacturing or cross-border trade, a Chinese IMBA gives access to a recruiting network of Chinese firms that a Western MBA does not. For a purely Western career, the brand recognition is weaker than a US or European school of the same cost.

If your goal is China expertise rather than general management, a specialist master's — in economics, public policy or China studies — may be better value.
