The predictable dip

The pattern in published accounts is remarkably consistent: the first two weeks are exciting, weeks three to twelve are difficult, and most students report a turning point somewhere in the second semester. The difficulty is compounded by the New Year period and by winter in the north.

Knowing that this is normal and expected is itself useful. The students who describe the dip as a personal failure are the ones who struggle most; the ones who expect it tend to ride it out.

What helps

Structure: a fixed weekly routine with exercise, a language-exchange partner, and one or two clubs. Contact with home on a schedule rather than impulsively, because unstructured calls often make the distance feel worse. Learning to cook two or three things you like. And a deliberate project outside coursework — a trip, a photography habit, learning a musical instrument — that gives you something to look forward to.

Contact with Chinese students is the strongest reported factor, because it converts "living abroad" into "living here".

When to escalate

If the difficulty persists beyond the first semester, affects your ability to attend classes or is accompanied by sleep or appetite changes, use the university counselling service and the international student office. There is no stigma in it, and the offices are used to this particular pattern in the first year.

If the problem is your supervisor, your programme or your funding, the international student office is the correct first stop — and the earlier in the academic year you raise it, the more options exist.

Las cifras de matrícula, plazos y estipendios se revisan cada ciclo. Confirma siempre la situación actual con la oficina de estudiantes internacionales de la universidad y en el portal oficial campuschina.org antes de solicitar.
