Why Shenzhen is different

Most Chinese university cities have centuries of history and campuses that grew organically. Shenzhen's academic presence was deliberately constructed from 2002 onwards: the Shenzhen University Town brought in graduate schools from Peking University, Tsinghua and Harbin Institute of Technology, and Southern University of Science and Technology was founded in 2011 as a research-reform experiment.

The result is that Shenzhen campuses are the most modern in China, with the highest proportion of overseas-trained faculty and, at SUSTech and the HIT Shenzhen campus, the highest entrance scores of any university in the country.

Costs and where to live

Shenzhen rents are close to Shanghai's but student dormitories are cheap and typically newer. Expect CNY 3,500–4,500 per month in a dormitory and CNY 4,500–6,000 renting privately, with a room in Nanshan or Futian from CNY 2,500.

The university districts are Nanshan (SUSTech, Shenzhen University, university town) and Guangming (SYSU's new Shenzhen campus). Both are connected by metro; Nanshan is closer to the coast and the tech campuses.

Industry access

Shenzhen's advantage for students is proximity: internships at Huawei, Tencent, DJI and the hundreds of hardware start-ups in Huaqiangbei are genuinely reachable on a metro line. Note that off-campus work requires school approval and an internship remark on your residence permit.

The city also has the strongest patent and hardware prototyping ecosystem in the world, which makes it an unusual place to study electronics, robotics, materials or design.

Practical notes

Shenzhen is a young, migrant city — almost everyone is from somewhere else, which makes it unusually easy to make friends. English is less widely spoken than in Shanghai, so basic Mandarin pays off quickly.

Summers are hot, humid and wet; winters are mild and dry. Hong Kong is 15 minutes away by high-speed rail from Futian, which many students use for flights and weekend travel.
