Заметки с мест: жизнь в Гуанчжоу глазами иностранного студента

Morning tea, the largest African and Southeast Asian student communities in China, trade-fair internships and a cost of living that leaves room to actually travel — what life in Guangzhou offers.

The most liveable of the big four

Guangzhou appears in international-student accounts with a specific phrase attached: the best price-to-quality ratio among China’s first-tier cities. Dorm rooms cost roughly the same as Beijing’s or Shanghai’s on paper, but off-campus life is measurably cheaper — a one-bedroom near Sun Yat-sen University or Jinan University runs about CNY 2,000–4,500, and a full canteen-and-street-food month can stay under CNY 2,500.

The climate writes its own chapter. Subtropical Guangzhou is hot and humid from May to September, with a typhoon season; the flip side is an outdoor campus life that never really stops — basketball courts at 22:00, night markets, and the riverfront run that follows the Pearl River.

Food as the city’s operating system

Every account of Guangzhou eventually becomes an account of food. Morning tea (yum cha) is a social institution: dim sum carts, table tea, hours-long breakfasts with classmates. A student’s honest budget line in Guangzhou is lower than elsewhere precisely because eating well is cheap — a proper dim sum breakfast costs CNY 25–45, and the campus canteens carry a Cantonese standard that students from other provinces openly envy.

Halal and international groceries cluster around communities that have traded through Guangzhou for decades; the city hosts the largest African trading community in Asia and long-standing Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern networks, which is also why its international student body is one of the most diverse in the country.

Trade fairs and what they mean for a CV

The Canton Fair is the practical reason business students choose Guangzhou. Twice a year the city fills with buyers from every continent, and universities recruit student interpreters, booth assistants and logistics helpers in the weeks before each session. For an international student, few part-time jobs convert into a CV line as directly: real exporters, real negotiation floors, real references.

Beyond the fair, Guangzhou’s economy anchors on trade, logistics, automotive and e-commerce (the city is the home of cross-border e-commerce pilot zones), and its startup costs are low enough that graduates describe staying as a serious option rather than a fallback.

Getting around

The metro network is the second largest in China and keeps expanding; a cross-city ride costs CNY 2–14. Shared bicycles cover the last kilometre everywhere, and the older districts are dense enough that walking remains a real mode. Guangzhou South railway station is one of the country’s high-speed hubs — Hong Kong is 48 minutes away by express train, which makes weekend Hong Kong trips a routine part of student life.

Budget, and the usual caveat

A typical dormitory-based monthly budget is CNY 2,200–3,600; a private flat brings it to CNY 4,500–6,500. Cantonese is the street language and Mandarin the campus language; both are learnable, and students who pick up even market-level Cantonese report a visibly warmer daily life.

Figures here are planning ranges for the 2026/27 cycle; rents and rules move, so verify with the university’s international office before deciding.
