Учёба в Китае для студентов из Бангладеш: 20 000 студентов, одна стипендия на десять заявок и лицензирование BMDC

Nearly 20,000 Bangladeshi students are in China, but only 55 won full government scholarships in 2023–24 from about 500 applicants. Understanding that ratio — and the BMDC route for medicine — is the whole game.

Короткий ответ

Bangladesh is one of the fastest-growing sources of students in China, and one of the least understood from the inside. The Chinese ambassador in Dhaka has put the number at nearly 20,000 — four times the roughly 5,000 of a decade ago — and 2025 was marked as both the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations and a China–Bangladesh year of people-to-people exchanges. Around 80 direct flights a week connect Dhaka with Chinese cities, which makes the logistics easier than for almost any other South Asian applicant pool.

The funding story is less comfortable. For the 2023–24 academic year, 55 Bangladeshi students received full Chinese Government Scholarships — 18 at undergraduate level, 23 at master's and 14 at doctoral — from roughly 500 applicants. That is a ratio of about one in ten, and the embassy itself described it as the most competitive round in three years. Any plan that assumes a full CSC award is a plan with a 90% failure probability.

Where Bangladeshi students apply

  • CSC Type A through the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka. The embassy runs the annual round, usually opening in autumn and closing in the new year, with results in summer. Applicants need a pre-admission letter or supervisor acceptance and a complete online file — no paper submissions.
  • CSC Type B direct to universities. About 280 Chinese universities recommend candidates on their own quotas. For Bangladeshi applicants this is the realistic full-funding route, and it is where most successful cases actually come from.
  • Provincial, municipal and university scholarships. Chinese provincial governments, city governments, universities, Confucius Institutes and vocational schemes all run separate awards open to Bangladeshi students, usually covering tuition and sometimes accommodation.
  • Self-funding. Tuition of CNY 12,000–40,000 a year and living costs of CNY 2,000–3,500 a month put a Chinese degree within reach for families who would never consider the UK or Australia.

Medicine: a licensing decision, not an admission decision

MBBS is the largest single field for Bangladeshi students in China, and the most consequential choice they make. The Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council recognises a limited list of Chinese universities — commonly cited as around 45 institutions — and recognition is only the first gate. Graduates must also pass the BMDC registration examination and complete the internship pathway before they can practise.

The practical rules that follow: verify the university against the current BMDC list before paying any deposit; confirm the programme is the English-medium clinical track with the clinical rotations BMDC expects; keep every syllabus, attendance record and hospital log, because the registration examination process asks for them; and budget for the possibility that a fifth-year return for pre-internship in Bangladesh changes the timeline. None of this is hidden — it is simply not on the recruitment agent's slide.

Engineering, computing and business

Outside medicine, engineering is the largest cluster: civil, mechanical, electrical and, increasingly, computer science and artificial intelligence. Chinese tuition in these fields runs CNY 16,000–30,000 a year, and graduates move into Chinese contractors working on Bangladeshi infrastructure, into the garment and textile supply chain that Chinese firms increasingly automate, and into the ICT sector. Business administration, economics and pharmacy follow.

Language is the differentiator in all of them. English-taught programmes exist and are good, but internships and graduate hiring in China run in Chinese; an HSK 4 certificate added to an engineering degree changes the salary conversation in both Dhaka and Guangzhou.

The obstacles, in order of consequence

  • Scholarship scarcity. With roughly 1 in 10 CSC applicants succeeding, applying only to the embassy route is a strategy for disappointment. Run Type B in parallel and target provincial and university awards.
  • BMDC recognition and licensing for medicine — the one mistake that cannot be corrected after graduation.
  • Document authentication. Transcripts, certificates and police clearance need attestation and certified translation, and the embassy round will not accept late uploads.
  • Language inside English-taught degrees. Classes are in English; hospitals, landlords and internship supervisors are not.
  • Cost of living shocks in the first month — deposit, bedding, insurance, residence permit fees — which catch families who budgeted only for tuition.

One in ten, and how to be the one

  • The Chinese Embassy in Dhaka advertises the government scholarship round once a year, usually closing in January or February for September entry. Fifty-five awards against roughly five hundred applicants is the recent ratio; plan for a narrow door and a second door behind it.
  • Applications go into the CSC system and are also collected by the embassy's education section. The file needs an admission notice, pre-admission letter or supervisor acceptance before it can be ranked — the same requirement that filters most South Asian applications.
  • Bachelor applicants now sit the CSCA subject test. Medicine and engineering candidates should check which subjects their target programme requires, because the test is programme-specific and cannot be guessed.
  • Provincial, municipal and university scholarships absorb far more Bangladeshi students than the embassy quota does. A university tuition waiver applied for directly, in parallel with the CSC file, is the realistic strategy.
  • Results and JW202 forms arrive between June and August. The X1 visa then has to be processed in Dhaka, and August appointments are tight.

The MBBS calculation, done honestly

Tuition for clinical medicine in China runs from about CNY 12,000 to 40,000 a year depending on the province and the university's standing, with MBBS at the top of that range. Add hostel at CNY 6,000 to 12,000 and living costs of CNY 1,200 to 2,000 a month, and a six-year degree lands somewhere between CNY 200,000 and 380,000. Families comparing offers should compare six-year totals, not first-year tuition.

The decisive number is not financial. The Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council recognises only a limited set of Chinese universities — a few dozen, not the hundreds that recruit from Bangladesh — and requires its own registration examination before a graduate can practise. Choosing a university that is cheap but unrecognised produces a degree that cannot be licensed at home, and no amount of clinical training changes that. Confirm the institution on the council's current list, in writing, before paying a deposit.

Failure modes seen most often

  • Agent-submitted files with unverifiable documents. Once a candidate is flagged for a falsified transcript or certificate, later applications are affected too.
  • Applying only to the embassy round. With a 1-in-10 ratio, a single application is a plan to wait another year.
  • No English or Chinese proficiency evidence. Programmes that teach in English still expect IELTS, TOEFL or a medium-of-instruction letter; Chinese-taught programmes expect HSK.
  • A medical form filled by an unapproved clinic. The physical must be done at a hospital the embassy recognises, and it expires within months.
  • Budgeting without the return ticket, insurance and registration fees. The first month in China routinely costs more than the estimate, and part-time work is restricted on a student visa.

The sequence that works: shortlist universities in October and check both Type B participation and, for medicine, BMDC listing; sit IELTS or HSK as your track requires; obtain a pre-admission letter; submit the embassy and university applications before the new-year deadline; prepare attested documents with time to spare; and apply for the X1 visa the moment the JW201/JW202 form arrives, because processing takes one to two weeks and the September intake does not wait.
