Ikhtisar

USTC was created by the Chinese Academy of Sciences to train scientists, and it remains the most research-dense university in China: nearly three quarters of its students are postgraduates, and the majority of graduates go on to research careers.

It is the best Chinese destination for physics, chemistry, mathematics and astronomy, and it runs the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory. Its international student body is deliberately small and research-focused, with most enrolments at master's and PhD level.

Sejarah

USTC was established in Beijing in 1958 by the Chinese Academy of Sciences as a direct response to the need for scientists for China's nuclear and defence programmes. Qian Xuesen was its first head of the department of mechanics.

The university moved to Hefei, Anhui province, in 1970 during a period of national relocation, and became permanently based there. In 1978 it created the Special Class for the Gifted Young, China's first programme for exceptionally talented teenagers.

USTC was the first Chinese university to establish a graduate school (1978), the first to run a national university science park, and is a member of both Project 985 and the C9 League. Its 2017 Double First Class mandate covers 11 disciplines, mostly in the basic sciences.

University of Science and Technology of China employs around 3,200 academic staff, including about 62 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. About 62 national academy members — an exceptionally high ratio for a university of 18,000 students. Most laboratories supervise international PhD students directly in English.

Master's and PhD applicants need a recognised degree, transcripts, two recommendation letters and a research proposal; a supervisor's preliminary acceptance is effectively mandatory. English-taught research degrees require IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90; Chinese-taught programmes require HSK 5.

Deadlines: Usually December – March for the September intake, with some CAS-affiliated programmes admitting in a second round up to May.. Application fee: CNY 500. Tuition: CNY 26,000–30,000 per year for bachelor's; CNY 30,000–40,000 for master's; most international PhD students are fully funded.
