Peking University's School of Public Health and Fudan's School of Public Health are the two strongest overall. Huazhong University of Science and Technology's Tongji School of Public Health is a national leader in occupational and environmental health. Sun Yat-sen University has a very large programme with strong infectious-disease research, and Beijing Normal University adds the social-science and health-geography dimension.
Zhejiang, Sichuan and Shanghai Jiao Tong also run substantial public health and global health programmes.
What you study
Epidemiology and biostatistics, health policy and systems, environmental and occupational health, maternal and child health, global health and communicable disease control. Chinese programmes are typically strong on quantitative methods and on the operational reality of running large public health systems.
A distinctive advantage is access to population-scale data: cohort studies, national surveillance systems and city-level health records that are simply unavailable at that scale elsewhere.
Career paths
Graduates move into national health ministries and agencies, WHO and other multilateral organisations, NGOs, health consultancies, hospital administration and academic research. Chinese universities have strong working relationships with WHO and with the global health programmes of the Gates Foundation and similar bodies.
