Kuliah di Tiongkok dari Vietnam: kuota kedutaan, beasiswa provinsi, jurusan, dan hambatan
About 23,000 Vietnamese students were enrolled in China in 2023–24, rising to roughly 28,000 in 2024. The route is well trodden, the funding is thinner than most applicants assume, and the real constraints sit in language and recognition.
Jawaban singkat
Vietnam sits third in China's international student table. China's Ministry of Education counted 23,000 Vietnamese students in the 2023–24 academic year; the 2024 compilation published via Nature puts the figure at roughly 28,000. Both numbers describe the same phenomenon from different angles: a land border, a century of shared educational vocabulary, and a labour market in which Chinese-language competence converts directly into wages.
But the funding does not scale with the student numbers, and that is the first thing a Vietnamese applicant needs to understand. At the 2024–25 certificate ceremony in Hanoi, 76 Vietnamese students received full Chinese Government Scholarships. For 2025–26 the embassy awarded 34. Those are country-quota numbers, not totals — and they are an order of magnitude smaller than the enrolled population.
Where Vietnamese students apply
- CSC Type A through the Chinese Embassy in Hanoi. Vietnam's Ministry of Education and Training screens and nominates candidates, so the embassy process begins with a domestic selection, not with the CSC portal. Expect a small quota, a competitive internal round and a February closing date.
- CSC Type B direct to universities. Roughly 280 Chinese universities recommend candidates themselves. This is where most Vietnamese degree students actually get funded, because a university's own quota is typically larger than the country quota.
- Guangxi and Yunnan provincial scholarships. Both provinces run schemes explicitly for Southeast Asian applicants, with Guangxi — the gateway for most Vietnamese students — offering the widest set. These awards usually cover tuition and part of accommodation.
- China-ASEAN Elite Scholarship. For English-taught master's and doctoral study, applied for through Vietnam's designated focal point between January and April. Underused by Vietnamese applicants.
- University and Confucius scholarships. Partial tuition waivers plus Chinese-language and teaching-track awards, applied for directly.
The calendar is the same across routes: universities open applications from November, most deadlines fall between February and April, results arrive in June and July, and enrolment is in September. Bachelor applicants from the 2026 intake onward also sit the CSCA academic proficiency test, and must have the score uploaded with the application.
What actually funds a Vietnamese degree
Full CSC awards cover tuition, dormitory, insurance and a monthly stipend of CNY 2,500 (bachelor), 3,000 (master) or 3,500 (doctorate). Provincial awards in Guangxi and Yunnan typically cover tuition, sometimes with a housing subsidy. University scholarships range from full waivers to 50% tuition reductions and are awarded on transcripts and interview.
The honest budget picture: without any scholarship, tuition of CNY 16,000–35,000 a year plus a dormitory at CNY 5,000–12,000 puts a Nanning or Kunming degree within reach of middle-class Vietnamese families, and well below the cost of an Australian or Japanese degree. With a provincial tuition waiver, the family's remaining burden is living costs, which in Guangxi run from roughly CNY 1,800 to 3,000 a month.
Majors: language first, then engineering
Chinese language remains the largest single entry point, and for good reason: Vietnamese employers pay a premium for Mandarin, and the border provinces absorb those graduates directly into trade, logistics and manufacturing. Engineering — mechanical, electrical, civil, and increasingly computer science — is the second cluster and the one growing fastest at postgraduate level. Economics, international trade and business Chinese follow, concentrated in Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing. Clinical medicine draws a smaller but persistent group, mostly into English-taught MBBS programmes.
There is a geographic logic worth exploiting. Guangxi universities — Guangxi University, Guangxi Normal, Guangxi Medical — recruit heavily in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and maintain Vietnamese-speaking administrative staff. Yunnan offers a second cluster. Further north, the trade-off is prestige against adaptation cost.
The bottlenecks
- The embassy quota is genuinely small. Applicants who assume the Hanoi route is the main door are usually wrong; 34–76 awards a year against tens of thousands of students means Type B and provincial routes are where the volume is.
- Academic Chinese. HSK 4 is an admission threshold, not a study competence. Vietnamese students who arrive with conversational fluency but no technical vocabulary report the same first-semester wall in engineering and economics programmes.
- Medical recognition. A Chinese MBBS must satisfy Vietnam's health ministry requirements and the domestic licensing pathway. Verify the specific university against the current recognised list before paying a deposit, not after.
- Document and timing discipline. Vietnamese transcripts need notarised translation, and the CSC portal will not accept late uploads. The single most common cause of a lost year is a document that arrives in March for a February deadline.
A workable sequence: choose the language track by October, shortlist five universities and check Type B participation, apply to Guangxi or Yunnan provincial schemes in parallel, request a pre-admission letter or supervisor acceptance for graduate study, and file everything before the February cutoff. If you are aiming at a full CSC award, treat the MOET nomination round as the real competition — because it is.
