Kuliah di Tiongkok dari Thailand: jalur pendaftaran, beasiswa, jurusan, dan kendala nyata

Thailand is now the largest single source of international students in China — roughly 34,000 in 2024. Here is how Thai applicants actually apply, what funds them, which majors absorb them, and where the process still goes wrong.

Jawaban singkat

Thailand is the quiet leader of the China-bound pipeline. Chinese Ministry of Education data compiled by Nature put the Thai student population in China at about 34,000 in 2024 — more than any other nationality, ahead of Pakistan, Vietnam, Russia and Indonesia. The Thai ambassador in Beijing cited roughly 28,000 students in a September 2026 interview, and the Chinese ministry counted close to 30,000 as far back as 2018, when Thailand ranked second only to South Korea. Whichever count you use, the direction is stable: Thailand sends more students to China than any country in the world, and has done so for most of the past decade.

The infrastructure behind that number is unusually deep. Thailand has more than a million Chinese-language learners — the largest HSK testing population anywhere — and a 2007 bilateral agreement on mutual recognition of higher education degrees that predates most of China's recent education diplomacy. That combination changes the applicant's calculus: language is less of a cliff, and a Chinese degree is less of a gamble.

Four routes, and how they differ

  • Chinese Government Scholarship, Type A. The Chinese Embassy in Bangkok administers Thailand's bilateral quota. Applications open in the autumn and close in early February; the embassy interviews shortlisted candidates and releases results in the summer. You need an admission notice, pre-admission letter or supervisor acceptance from at least one listed university before you submit.
  • Chinese Government Scholarship, Type B. Roughly 280 Chinese universities recruit and recommend candidates directly. For Thai bachelor applicants this is often the more realistic route, because university quotas are larger and less exposed to country-level competition.
  • China-ASEAN Elite Scholarship. A dedicated scheme for ASEAN nationals funding English-taught master's and doctoral programmes, plus short professional programmes. Applications run from January to early April through Thailand's designated focal point. It is the least-known and least-crowded graduate route available to Thai students.
  • Provincial and university awards. Yunnan, Guangxi and Fujian run scholarships aimed squarely at Southeast Asian applicants, and most large universities offer partial tuition waivers applied for directly. Confucius Institute and International Chinese Language Teachers scholarships cover language and teaching-track study.

Two calendar facts matter more than the paperwork. First, since the 2026 intake, bachelor applicants must sit the CSCA academic proficiency test and upload the score; the required subjects depend on the programme, so check with the target university before booking. Second, the 2024 mutual visa exemption between China and Thailand does not cover long-term study — degree students still need an X1 visa and a residence permit after arrival.

What funds Thai students

Full Chinese Government Scholarships cover tuition, dormitory accommodation, medical insurance and a monthly stipend — CNY 2,500 at undergraduate level, 3,000 for master's and 3,500 for doctoral students. On top of that, Thai applicants have access to a wider set of partial awards than most nationalities: provincial scholarships in the southwest, municipal schemes in Xiamen and elsewhere, and university-level tuition waivers that are awarded on transcripts rather than on country quotas.

The practical consequence is that Thai students rarely need a full scholarship to make the numbers work. Tuition in the CNY 20,000–40,000 range plus a dormitory at CNY 5,000–20,000 a year is already below the cost of a private Thai international programme, and the living-cost gap between Kunming or Nanning and Bangkok is smaller than most families expect.

Which majors absorb Thai students

Three clusters dominate. Chinese language and teaching-Chinese-to-speakers-of-other-languages remains the single largest entry point, fed by Thailand's school system and its shortage of qualified local teachers. Clinical medicine is the second: English-taught MBBS programmes draw students who cannot get a seat in Thai public medical schools. Engineering and business follow, increasingly at the master's level and increasingly in English.

The geography is distinctive too. Yunnan and Guangxi universities recruit heavily in northern and northeastern Thailand on the strength of proximity and shared culture, while Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Xi'an attract students aiming at the civil-service, trade and tourism sectors back home. Chinese universities have also invested in Thai studies — nearly 100 Chinese institutions now teach Thai as a major — which creates exchange capacity in both directions.

The obstacles, stated plainly

  • Language is not one hurdle but two. HSK 4 gets you into a Chinese-taught programme; it does not get you through a lecture on econometrics. Thai students who arrive with HSK 4 and no subject vocabulary consistently report the first semester as the hardest part of the degree.
  • Medical recognition. A Chinese MBBS is accepted in Thailand only through the Thai Medical Council's own approval and licensing process. The university list, the clinical rotation requirements and the licensing exam are separate gates, and the university's marketing page is not the place to confirm any of them.
  • Applying to one university. The most common structural mistake: Thai applicants tend to treat the process like a domestic admission, pick a single institution, and skip the parallel routes. Running the embassy Type A and two or three Type B applications simultaneously costs nothing extra and multiplies the odds.
  • Document translation. Thai transcripts and graduation certificates need certified Chinese or English translations, and the embassy route requires everything uploaded in one of those two languages — a step that regularly delays otherwise strong applications past the deadline.

The sequencing that works is boring and reliable: decide Chinese-taught versus English-taught by October; shortlist universities and confirm each one's Type B participation; secure a pre-admission letter or supervisor acceptance; submit the embassy and university applications inside the February window; book the CSCA in December if you are applying for a bachelor's degree; and start the X1 visa as soon as the JW201/JW202 form arrives.

Thailand's advantage is not that China is easy to enter. It is that the two systems have been connected for two decades — which means the information exists, the alumni network exists, and the only real risk is treating a well-worn path as a formality.
