Présentation
Tsinghua University is China's flagship science, engineering and design institution and, by almost every international measure, the strongest university in Asia today. It sits on a 400-hectare campus in the Haidian district of north-west Beijing, immediately adjacent to Peking University, in a cluster that also contains the Chinese Academy of Sciences' main research institutes.
For international students Tsinghua is unusually open: it runs the largest English-taught offering of any Chinese university, including the Schwarzman Scholars master's programme, the Tsinghua–MIT MBA, and a full English bachelor's track in Computer Science, Economics and Global Affairs. Around 4,000 international students from more than 120 countries are enrolled.
Histoire
Tsinghua was founded in 1911 as Tsinghua College with funds from the Boxer Indemnity, initially as a preparatory school sending Chinese students to the United States. It became a full university in 1925 and a national comprehensive university in 1928.
During the Second Sino-Japanese War the university relocated to Kunming as part of the wartime National Southwestern Associated University together with Peking University and Nankai University. After 1949 Tsinghua was reorganised as a polytechnic institution, and only in the 1980s did it rebuild its schools of humanities, economics, management and art.
Tsinghua joined Project 211 in 1996, Project 985 in 1999 and the Double First Class plan in 2017. Its centenary in 2011 was paired with an explicit internationalisation strategy that created the Schwarzman College (2016), the Tsinghua SIGS graduate school in Shenzhen (2018) and today's English-taught degree portfolio.
