Where to study
Peking University's School of Pharmaceutical Sciences is the strongest research faculty. China Pharmaceutical University in Nanjing and Shenyang Pharmaceutical University are the two dedicated national pharmacy universities and produce a large share of the industry's workforce. Fudan, Zhejiang and Shanghai Jiao Tong all run substantial pharmacy and pharmacology programmes, and Huazhong University of Science and Technology adds traditional medicine research.
In traditional Chinese medicine specifically, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine are the leading institutions.
What is studied
Pharmacology and toxicology, pharmaceutics and formulation science, medicinal chemistry, natural product chemistry, drug analysis and quality control, pharmacognosy and, increasingly, biologics and antibody engineering.
Chinese natural-product research is a distinctive strength: the discovery of artemisinin by Tu Youyou and her team, which won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, came out of exactly this tradition.
Career and funding
The Chinese pharmaceutical sector — WuXi AppTec, BeiGene, Innovent, Hengrui and hundreds of others — recruits heavily from these universities, and international graduates with Chinese language skills are increasingly valuable in their global business development and regulatory affairs functions.
Most international postgraduate students in pharmacy are funded through CSC, provincial scholarships or supervisor grants.
