Where to study
Beijing Normal University has the strongest psychology faculty in China and one of the largest in the world, with particular strength in developmental, educational and cognitive psychology. Peking University's School of Psychological and Cognitive Sciences is the leading research faculty for cognitive neuroscience, with world-class imaging facilities.
The Institute of Psychology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences admits graduate students directly and offers excellent funding. East China Normal University, Zhejiang and Southwest University are also strong.
Research areas
Cognitive neuroscience and brain imaging, language and reading development, child and adolescent development, mental health and clinical psychology, cross-cultural psychology, and educational psychology. Chinese research on reading acquisition in Chinese characters is internationally distinctive and cited widely in the global literacy literature.
Machine learning is increasingly integrated, with large EEG and fMRI datasets becoming standard.
Practical considerations
Master's and doctoral programmes with English supervision are widely available, particularly at the Academy of Sciences and the top Beijing faculties. Clinical training in Chinese is restricted to Chinese-speaking trainees and requires HSK 6 plus a Chinese psychology background.
Research careers in China are publication-driven and the expectation is clear: doctoral students are generally expected to produce one to three international journal articles.
