Where to study
Beijing University of Chinese Medicine is the top-ranked TCM university and the most internationally connected. Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is strong in integrative medicine. Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine is known for its classical scholarship, and Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine for acupuncture and moxibustion research.
Many comprehensive universities, including Fudan, Zhejiang and Huazhong University of Science and Technology, also run TCM research programmes, and most provinces have at least one dedicated TCM university.
What the programmes involve
The five-year Bachelor of Medicine in TCM covers Chinese medical theory (yin-yang, five elements, meridians), materia medica, herbal formulas, acupuncture and moxibustion, diagnostics, and substantial Western biomedical science including anatomy, physiology and pharmacology. Clinical training takes place in affiliated TCM hospitals.
English-taught programmes exist for the theory-heavy early years, but clinical placements in Chinese hospitals require Mandarin at a working level. Postgraduate research programmes in TCM pharmacology and natural products are more accessible for international students.
The critical question
Before enrolling, establish whether the qualification will let you practise in your home country. Regulation varies enormously: some countries licence acupuncture separately, some have no TCM registration pathway, and some require an additional examination. Speak to the relevant regulator, not to a recruitment agent.
For research careers in natural product chemistry, pharmacology and integrative medicine, however, Chinese TCM universities offer genuine and well-funded opportunities.
