What the cold is actually like

The most repeated observation is that -25 °C outdoors and +22 °C indoors is a very different experience from a European winter at 0 °C in a poorly heated flat. Chinese buildings are heated to a comfortable temperature throughout, campuses have covered or heated transitions between buildings, and students report spending most of the winter warm.

The genuine adjustments are practical: you need a proper down coat, thermal layers, gloves, a hat and boots with grip. All of this is cheap to buy locally and better suited to the climate than imports.

Why students end up enjoying it

Winter is the social season in the north-east. The Harbin Ice and Snow Festival runs through January and February and is one of the largest winter events in the world; Changchun and Shenyang have their own winter festivals. Indoor life is warm and social, with hotpot, tea houses and the campus culture continuing normally.

Students also report that the cold is a bonding experience with Chinese classmates in a way that a mild winter is not.

The hidden advantage

Costs in north-east China are the lowest of any region with top-tier universities, and the summer is short and genuinely pleasant at 20–28 °C. For a student choosing on value rather than climate, Harbin, Changchun and Shenyang offer Project 985 and C9 League universities at living costs around half of Beijing's.

Les frais de scolarité, les échéances et les montants des bourses sont révisés à chaque cycle. Vérifiez toujours la situation en cours auprès du service des étudiants internationaux de l'université et sur le portail officiel campuschina.org avant de candidater.
