Notes de terrain : ce qui fonctionne vraiment pour apprendre le chinois en Chine

Compiled from published accounts by learners at Chinese universities — the tactics that are consistently reported to work, and the ones that are not.

The immersion trap

A recurring theme in student accounts is that being in China does not by itself teach you Chinese. International student dormitories, international classes and the reflex of speaking English with other foreign students can produce a year abroad with almost no linguistic progress.

The reported fix is structural rather than motivational: live with or near Chinese students, join non-international clubs, take at least one class per semester that is not for international students, and arrange a language exchange with a fixed weekly slot rather than an open-ended intention.

Characters and tones

Learners consistently report that tones and character writing are the two areas where daily practice produces the largest return, and that reading lags behind speaking unless deliberately trained. Daily character practice over a long period beats intensive bursts, and reading Chinese social media, menus and signage rather than textbook passages is reported to accelerate recognition substantially.

The reported timeframes: roughly 600–800 contact hours to reach HSK 4, and 1,200–1,800 hours for HSK 5. Those are consistent with the published syllabi rather than with marketing claims.

What people regret

The most common regret in published accounts is not starting Chinese before arrival. Arriving with even HSK 2 makes the first semester categorically different, because you can handle administration, make local friends earlier and avoid the isolation that leads some students to leave.

The second most common regret is treating Chinese as optional because the degree was taught in English.
