Assessment and expectations

Chinese undergraduate teaching is examination-centred, with a single final examination often carrying 60–70% of the mark. Attendance is usually recorded and can affect eligibility to sit the examination. Class participation carries less weight than in a Western liberal arts setting, though this is changing at the strongest universities and in English-taught programmes.

Contact hours are high: 20–28 hours of class per week is normal at undergraduate level, and laboratory or studio sessions are long.

The supervisor relationship for postgraduate students

For master's and doctoral students the supervisor ("导师") is central: they determine your research direction, your funding, your access to equipment and often your publications. The relationship is more hierarchical than in many Western systems, and students report that being direct about problems early is far better received than silence.

Establish the working expectation in the first month: how often you should report, whether you are expected in the laboratory on weekends, and what output is expected by when. Students who do not clarify this early are the ones who report difficulties later.

Face and feedback

Public criticism is uncomfortable in Chinese academic settings, and some supervisors and classmates will avoid correcting you in front of others. Conversely, academic criticism delivered privately can be blunt. The practical implication is to seek feedback privately and to interpret public politeness as politeness rather than endorsement.

Group work is common and Chinese students generally work hard in it; the most common friction is about decision-making style and the expected level of independent initiative.

Les frais de scolarité, les échéances et les montants des bourses sont révisés à chaque cycle. Vérifiez toujours la situation en cours auprès du service des étudiants internationaux de l'université et sur le portail officiel campuschina.org avant de candidater.
