The one-paragraph answer

Choose Beijing for universities and the capital’s cultural density; Shanghai for international comfort and finance careers; Guangzhou for cost of living, food and trade; Shenzhen for technology and hardware. Every other difference follows from those anchors.

What follows is the comparison students actually ask for — not rankings, but the daily texture of four cities seen from a dormitory.

Cost of living, side by side

Dormitory fees are similar everywhere (roughly CNY 750–1,600 per month depending on the university). The divergence starts off campus: a one-bedroom runs about CNY 4,000–6,500 in Beijing, CNY 3,500–6,000 in Shanghai, CNY 2,000–4,500 in Guangzhou and CNY 2,500–5,000 in Shenzhen. Food is cheap in all four, cheapest in Guangzhou. A realistic all-in dormitory budget: Beijing CNY 2,500–4,000; Shanghai CNY 3,000–4,500; Guangzhou CNY 2,200–3,600; Shenzhen CNY 2,500–4,200.

Transport and distance

All four metros are extensive and start at CNY 2–3. Beijing’s network is the largest; Shanghai’s is the densest with the shortest waits; Guangzhou’s links directly to Hong Kong in under an hour; Shenzhen’s crosses into Hong Kong at several checkpoints. High-speed rail turns all four into regional hubs: from Shanghai, Hangzhou is 45 minutes; from Beijing, Tianjin is 30; from Guangzhou or Shenzhen, the whole Pearl River Delta is under an hour.

Internships and what each city pays you back in

Beijing pays in institutions: ministries, embassies, state research institutes, the headquarters of the national tech champions, and an unmatched lecture circuit. Shanghai pays in markets: finance, FMCG, multinational regional HQs and the most internship-friendly employers. Guangzhou pays in trade: the Canton Fair, export houses and cross-border e-commerce. Shenzhen pays in hardware and speed: consumer electronics, drones, EVs, telecom and a maker culture where prototypes are real.

The small stuff that decides daily happiness

Climate splits the list: the north has real winters and heating; the south has humidity, typhoons and twelve months of green. Language pressure is lowest in Shanghai, highest outside campus in Beijing; Guangzhou adds Cantonese on the street; Shenzhen is functionally all-Mandarin. Nightlife and international food skew Shanghai; campus traditions and student politics skew Beijing; food culture skews Guangzhou; weekend nature skews Shenzhen.

And one line appears in every account, whatever the city: the practical quality of life — payments, delivery, safety on a late-night walk home, the metro at midnight — is far higher than incoming students expect. All four cities are app-run, cashless and safe by the standards of any large city anywhere. The decision is not which city is good; it is which version of student life you want.

How to actually decide

Work backwards from two facts: your programme’s campus location (many universities teach on suburban campuses far from the postcard city centre) and your field’s internship geography. A finance student should weight Shanghai, a robotics student Shenzhen, a policy or humanities student Beijing, a trade or supply-chain student Guangzhou — then let rent, climate and food taste settle the tie.

Numbers in this article are planning ranges observed across student accounts for the 2026/27 cycle. Prices move; verify current rents, dormitory fees and visa rules with your university’s international student office before signing anything.
