Dual-degree structures with Michigan, Edinburgh, Illinois and Paris partners give international students a foreign award and a Chinese degree.

China has approved a limited number of Sino-foreign cooperative institutions and programmes that award a foreign degree alongside the Chinese one. The best known include the University of Michigan–Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute in mechanical and electrical and computer engineering, the Zhejiang University–Edinburgh Institute in biomedical sciences, the ZJU–UIUC Institute of Engineering, and the SJTU Paris Elite Institute of Technology.

Two independent Sino-foreign universities also operate: Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in Suzhou and Duke Kunshan University in Kunshan, both teaching entirely in English and awarding foreign degrees directly.

Costs are substantially below studying in the US or UK for the same award, though higher than a standard Chinese programme, often in the range of CNY 60,000–100,000 per year. Applicants should confirm exactly which degree is awarded, whether time abroad is required, and whether the programme appears on the Ministry of Education's approval list for cooperative programmes.
