Lisez les petits caractères : sur quel campus étudierez-vous vraiment ?
Several leading Chinese universities teach programmes across multiple cities, and the campus is often not the one applicants picture.
Zhejiang University, Nanjing University, Shandong University, Jilin University, Sichuan University, Sun Yat-sen University and Harbin Institute of Technology all teach programmes across multiple campuses, in some cases in different cities. A programme branded with a famous university name may be delivered an hour or more from the city that applicants associate with it.
Examples that catch students out: Zhejiang University's International Campus is in Haining, a town in Jiaxing, not in Hangzhou; Harbin Institute of Technology has campuses in Harbin, Weihai and Shenzhen; Sun Yat-sen teaches across Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen; Shandong University's Qingdao campus is on the coast, hours from its Jinan base; Jilin University's six campuses have very different locations within Changchun.
The remedy is simple: ask the department in writing which campus, which building and which faculty, and check the campus against the city you thought you were moving to before accepting the offer.
