Estudiar medicina en China: MBBS, posgrado clínico y formación hospitalaria
China trains more doctors than any country. For international students the MBBS is the entry point, but postgraduate clinical training is where the real value is.

Where the strongest medical schools are
Sichuan University's West China School of Medicine and its Stomatology school are the most research-intensive, and West China Hospital is one of the largest single-site hospitals in the world. Central South University's Xiangya School dates to 1914 and is one of China's oldest Western medical schools. Shanghai Jiao Tong's School of Medicine (Ruijin, Renji, Xinhua hospitals) and Fudan's Shanghai Medical College (Zhongshan, Huashan) are the most prestigious in Shanghai. Peking University Health Science Center, Sun Yat-sen and Zhejiang round out the top tier.
For dentistry specifically, Sichuan University's West China School of Stomatology is the best in Asia by a wide margin.
MBBS versus postgraduate medicine
The six-year English-taught MBBS is the standard route for international undergraduates. Teaching quality varies; the strongest programmes use their affiliated hospitals systematically and have international student pass rates on home-country licensing examinations that they are willing to publish.
For graduates who already hold a medical degree, a Chinese master's or doctoral degree in clinical or basic medicine is a different proposition: research-focused, often fully funded through CSC, and conducted inside well-equipped laboratories. There are also English-taught Clinical Master's programmes for international physicians that combine clinical rotations with research.
Practical checks before you commit
Confirm the university is on the Ministry of Education list of institutions permitted to teach MBBS in English. Confirm it is on your home regulator's recognised list — India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and others maintain specific lists and require qualifying examinations. Ask for the English-medium clinical teaching arrangements, since some programmes revert to Chinese in the hospital years. And speak to students in the cohort above yours in your own country.
