Where to study
Xiamen University's College of Ocean and Earth Sciences is the strongest overall, with its own research vessels and a coastal marine station. The Ocean University of China in Qingdao is the dedicated national marine university and is strong in fisheries, marine biology and marine chemistry. Zhejiang University's Zhoushan campus focuses on ocean science and marine engineering, and HIT's Weihai campus works on ocean engineering and shipbuilding.
The Chinese Academy of Sciences operates several marine institutes, including the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology in Guangzhou and the Institute of Oceanology in Qingdao, which admit graduate students.
Research focus
Physical and chemical oceanography, marine biogeochemistry, fisheries science and aquaculture, marine geology and seabed resources, marine ecology and conservation, and ocean engineering and offshore structures.
Chinese marine research on the South China Sea and on aquaculture at industrial scale is internationally distinctive, and aquaculture research in particular has direct application in food security.
Practical notes
Postgraduate programmes in marine science are frequently available with English supervision and CSC funding. Fieldwork involves sea time on university vessels, sometimes for weeks at a time, and the coastal campuses in Qingdao, Xiamen and Zhoushan are where most of the activity happens.
